3 Signs Your Roof Decking Is Damaged

High winds, driving rain, heavy snow loads and UV rays can all cause your roof shingles to wear out faster than they should. But that’s not the end of the problem. The part of your roof that is right below your shingles is called the roof decking, and it can also get damaged. While a small amount of damaged roof decking might not seem like a big deal, it could result in major structural problems and expensive repair costs if not addressed promptly.

Roof Decking Is Damaged

State Roofing & Exteriors shares three signs your roof decking is damaged, as well as the reason why repairing it is not a good idea.

Signs of a Damaged Roof Deck

1. Leaks. You know your roof is leaking if you find water spots on your ceiling, stains on your walls, or peeling paint or wallpaper. Access to the attic may also expose other signs your roof decking is compromised, including damp insulation and dry rot on the trusses and rafters.

2. Sagging. When the decking is damaged, the roof may sag. This might be visible from your yard or from your second floor. Check the outside of your home after big storms to see if there is any warping.

3. Missing shingles. If any shingles are missing, snow and rain can get onto the decking. To head off potential problems, check your property frequently to see whether any shingles have fallen off your roof, especially after strong winds. Have roofing specialists fix any openings.

Why Deck Repair Is Not an Option

The roof deck is mainly made of wood, which makes it susceptible to moisture damage. As water seeps through your roof via a crack or opening in your outer roof covering (the shingles) and through the underlayment, the decking will be soaked. The longer this happens, the more mold will grow and rot will infest the material. You can’t get rid of it once it starts appearing across large areas of the roof. So to make sure your roofing system remains intact, having the decking replaced is the only option.
